Before my first day I had a teams meeting to get to know the team again and meet the other work placement student, Xander. After the call I reached out and exchanged numbers with Xander as we start this process together.
My first day began early. A fresh 9am start across to central London. I got there bright and shiny and entered a building that seemed a creative workshop and space for many businesses. I felt a bit lost with no front desk to ask where to go. Xander then wondered in and we hung out and talked about our respective courses. We were then greeted by the tech manager, Other Lucas.
Our first day was the worst day at Darkfield and I genuinely questioned if I could keep it up. We sanded down a huge hard hot metal shipping container in the blazing sun and then worked on cleaning it ready to paint. It was hard work and took four of us from 9-5. My commute was almost 2hrs each way and I got home exhausted. Although I had a much better day than my fellow placement student, as Xander ended that day in A&E. Whilst scraping chipped paint off of the container her got some in his eye. They tried unsuccessfully with an eye bath and for the next few days he was perceived antibiotic eye drops. This was an issue caused by the lack of PPE as there was only one pair of protective goggles available.
